What is an eSIM?

Last updated: September 29, 2025

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of the traditional plastic SIM card. Instead of inserting a physical card into your phone, an eSIM is built into your device and can be activated by downloading a plan directly onto it.

Like a physical SIM, an eSIM securely stores the data your phone needs to connect to a mobile network, make calls, send texts, and use data. The difference is that with an eSIM, there’s no shipping, swapping, or waiting — it’s instant and managed entirely on your device.

When used for travel, this is often called a travel eSIM. It works just like your regular SIM but gives you local data while abroad, so you can stay connected without paying roaming fees on your primary carrier.
